How to Get a Homeowners Insurance Estimate (Without Giving Away Your Info)

When you are just starting to shop for homeowners insurance, you will find that it is very difficult to get a rough estimate of what homeowners insurance premiums are without actually talking to an insurance agent or filling out a whole bunch of information about yourself and your home. This is somewhat understandable because homeowners insurance quotes vary a lot depending on a wide range of factors from the square footage of your home to the distance to the nearest fire station.

Still if you are just starting to shop around and want to get a rough idea what others have paid for their insurance coverage, there are a few surveys of homeowners insurance premiums floating around the internet. Here are a couple:

NAIC 2003 Homeowners Insurance Premium Avgs by State [PDF]
III 2002 Comparison of Homeowners Insurance Premiums

If you are lucky, your state goverment's Dept. of Insurance web site will have more detailed surveys of what others have paid for homeowners insurance.
